Jesus Himself Drew Near
’Jesus Himself drew near ‘
In the final chapter of the third Gospel, Doctor Luke relates the encounter of two of the disciples with the Lord Jesus. As they walk, they talk – of two mind-blowing matters – the Death by crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth – and the report that He was now again alive.
As they walked, they were sad – their deep distress was obvious. (v17)
First it was, that the One Who they so admired, recognized not only as a prophet – but as the prophet, the Messiah, the Promised Deliverer had been rejected, executed and placed in a tomb.
And secondly – that in some way – three days later – He was now alive again. (v23)
They are facing the ultimate questions about the Lord Jesus –Who He was / is – the purpose of His death and that of His power over death.
But as they walk – and are so sad – “Jesus Himself drew near and went with them” And as they walked they listened – to an unfolding of Old Testament prophesies – to reminders of His predictions of ‘rising again on the third day’ – and doubtless were brought to understand the reason for His suffering and death at Calvary. They said, “did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us”. They had been brought to a personal application and understanding of Isaiah’s confession of faith
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes, we are healed.” Isa 535
By inviting Him to their dwelling – there is recognition “they fully knew Him” (v31).
Whether fatigued or not- they retrace their steps to Jerusalem- and along with fellow disciples are granted a further meeting with their RISEN LORD. Of that moment it is recorded “Then were the disciples glad when they saw the LORD.” John 2020
When we read the Bible – especially about the Person of Christ – recognize His love for such as ourselves and His suffering for our sins on the Cross – the Lord Jesus draws near to us and awaits our invitation for Him to enter our hearts and lives.
It is only when we have done this – that we will know His presence day by day and can look forward to His Coming again (John 143) and – not least – knowing His presence in the life yet to be !
